Great Blue Herons are patient predators. I found this one perched on top of a swallows' nest box, and at first thought it was trying to get at the baby swallows inside, but soon realized it was using the box as a lookout. It appeared to be actively hunting, so I stuck around to see what it would do, and was rewarded minutes later as it plunged into the lake only to emerge triumphantly a moment later with a nice fish in its beak.
